Neural Control of Radular Retractor Muscles of the Pulmonate Snail, Planorbarius Corneus (l.): Functional Anatomy and Properties of Neuromuscular Units
نویسنده
چکیده
The paired supralateral radular retractor muscles of Planorbarius are innervated by eight (four pairs) of buccal motoneurones. Each motoneurone supplies both muscles, the ipsiand contralateral motor responses being similar, and identical to those produced by its contralateral partner. This arrangement apparently secures equivalence of motor output to the two muscles, irrespective of discrepancies in spiking between homologous motoneurones across the midline, and relates to the strong mechanical linkage between the muscles exerted by the radula. The neuromuscular units are essentially non-overlapping, have properties which range from tonic to phasic, and may act independently providing the flexibility in control required of bifunctional muscles participating in both tensing and retraction of the radula during each feeding cycle.

Physicochemical properties of Planorbis corneus erythrocruorin.
The erythrocruorin from the snail Planorbis corneus had a sedimentation coefficient, so/20,w, of 33.5 +/- 0.31 S, and a molecular weight of 1.65 x 10(6) +/- 0.04 x 10(6) by high-speed sedimentation-equilibrium ultracentrifugation. The amino acid composition and absorption spectrum of the protein are reported. A very low number of half-cystine residues was found, corresponding to 0.4 residue per...
متن کاملFunctional and Morphological Bases of Trophic Specialization in Sunfishes (Teleostei, Centrarch idae)
The gross morphology and electrical activity of the muscles of the pharyngeal apparatus of centrarchid sunfishes (Lepomis) are analyzed within a monophyletic clade containing species specialized for snail-eating. Outgroup comparisons of both structure and activity patterns of muscles permit examination of the relationship between specialized diet and function of the trophic apparatus. In most s...
متن کاملIsolation and properties of vitellogenic ferritin from snails.
The iron storage protein ferritin is the principal yolk protein in oocytes of the snails Planorbarius corneus L. and Lymnaea stagnalis L. This report gives an account of the isolation procedure and of some properties of snail ferritins. The isolation procedure includes a heat-denaturation step, gel filtration on Sepharose 6B and two ultracentrifugation steps followed by electrophoresis. Ferriti...

Infectivity of Pseudechinoparyphium echinatum cercariae to 11 species of gastropod was examined experimentally. Broad specificity and differential host-parasite compatibility were exhibited. Nine gastropod species functioned as second intermediate hosts. Planorbarius corneus, Physa fontinalis, Lymnaea peregra and Biomphalaria alexandrina showed high levels of compatibility with the parasite. In...
متن کاملShort Communication Extracellular Changes in Ion Concentrations Induced by Acetylcholine in the Salivary Glands of the Pond Snail Planorbis Corneus
Salivary gland cells of the pond snail Planorbis corneus produce a biphasic depolarizing-hyperpolarizing electrical response following the application of acetylcholine (ACh). Ion-substitution experiments have indicated that the depolarizing phase of the ACh response is produced at least in part by an influx of Na + , while the subsequent hyperpolarization results from the activity of an electro...
